  1. I was given two small knifes with scrimshaw work on them, and looks like they were signed with a lower case e on them. Would you happen to know the artist ? They were purchased in St Ignace Mi Thank you you time and knowledge.

    1. Hi John, would you be able to send some pics to questions@scrimshaw.com ? I’d love to see the work, and I should be able to put them up as a “Mystery Artist” post shortly as well. A good clear picture of the entire scrimshaw, and a close-up of the initial if possible would be great. Also, a little history, such as the state you found or aquired them (won’t need the city – just the general vicinity) would be great.

      1. Hi Andrew, I have a small
Scrimshaw knife that I got years a go in Mackinaw city MI. It has a name on it
Martha Winegar. The picture is of Deer stag. Can find nothing. Any ideas?

        1. Hi Tim, and thanks for writing! I’m not familiar with the name, would you be able to send pictures to questions@scrimshaw.com including a nice clear picture of the name? I could put up a “Mystery Artist” post and see if anyone is familiar with the artist. If you have an idea as to when about you had purchased it may help as well. Here’s to hoping!

  2. I have a faux ivory scrimshaw ring with a large square rigged sailing ship on it. I acquired it as a prize at the Michilimackinac in the early 1980s. It appears to be signed “D. Johnson(?)_____”.

  3. I have a small scrimshaw piece that was given to me by my late father. It has a face of a cat that now is very faded & has a gold bail to be hung on my charm. Racelet. I was hoping to find an artist who might be able to recreate a more vivid cat. Could you let me know if that is possible & I could easily send a picture of the piece. Thank you, Kathleen

    1. Hi Kathleen, and thanks for writing! If you would send a picture and the state you live in, I’d be happy to put it up on the site and hopefully find a scrimshaw artist that would be able to help you. Due to the laws regarding ivory it would not be advisable to send it out of state since it may get confiscated, despite the fact that you are only getting it worked on and not selling it.

  4. I am considering selling my small collection of whale tooth scrimshaw pieces.
    Artists:1) Alvarado…2)Shan
    *One unsigned piece depicts a sailing ship named BOSTONIA – 4 ½” X 21/4″
*Another sailing ship piece is 4″ X 1″ …also shows a boy holding a model of the ship leaving port
*Another shows whaling ship and sounding whale
*Another shows a whaling ship and breaching sperm whale
Can you tell me anything about the artists and the Bostonia?

How do I begging the process of selling these beautiful pieces?

    Thank you,
    Ron Smith
